Three Inspiring Quotes on Reading and Writing
(1) Stephen King on writing in three words:
“Telepathy of Course”
The more you think about it, the more it’s true! Books are magical in this sense. One person is, from centuries ago or thousands of miles away, communicating with your mind through their own. Which is why I enjoy writing so much — there is a realconnectivity to it.
(2) Scientist and author, Carl Sagan, on the magic of books:
"What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic."
Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions. I can’t think of much to add to that.
(3) American writer and Nobel Prize Laureate William Faulkner:
“Don’t be a writer. Be Writing”
If you are writing anything important, I’d say this is the very first piece of advice to take on fully. The enemy to writing is, of course, not doing so. There’s never an almost perfect time to wait for, so just get after it. You might be amazed at what you produce.
